Is preventive dentistry necessary?

The best defense is a strong offence when it comes to healthy gums and teeth. Preventive dentistry is crucial. A healthy diet combined with proper dental hygiene helps keep your teeth and gums healthy. Regular dental checkups insure proper dental hygiene, early detection of problems and can often help prevent dental problems before they occur.

How can I prevent dental problems?

Two things are most essential for the prevention of problems such as tooth decay, tooth loss, and gum disease: proper oral hygiene and routine cleanings and check ups – scheduled twice a year – with our dentist.

How do I prevent tooth decay?

Tooth decay occurs when bacteria break down the minerals in your teeth to form a cavity. To avoid tooth decay, brush and floss twice a day; eliminate or reduce certain foods and drinks from your diet; visit your dentist regularly; and make sure you have fluoride treatments in your water, through a rinse, or perhaps prescribed by our dentist.

How does fluoride prevent tooth decay?

Each day, minerals such as fluoride, phosphate and calcium are naturally remineralized onto the tooth enamel through the water and food we eat. If you don’t consume enough minerals to repair the enamel layer it can lead to tooth decay. Fortunately, fluoride helps by making the tooth more resistant to acid attacks. You can prevent tooth decay by drinking water treated with fluoride regularly. Our dentist can determine the fluoride level of your drinking water and can recommend fluoride supplements if necessary. These usually come in drops or tablets.

How do I avoid gum disease?

Gingivitis, or red and swollen gums that bleed easily, is an early stage of gum disease. Gum disease occurs when gingivitis is left untreated, and the gums pull away from the teeth to form pockets that become infected. As the body’s immune system fights the bacteria, this can combine with the bacteria and start breaking down the connective tissue that holds your teeth in place, along with the bone. If gum disease is left untreated, your gums and bone can be damaged and tooth loss can occur. Patients can usually avoid gum disease simply by routine brushing and flossing.

How do I prevent bad breath?

Bad breath, or Halitosis, is caused by particles of food that are left in the mouth and begin to deteriorate. Consistent bad breath may indicate a more serious condition such as gum disease. Routine brushing and flossing helps prevent the food particle buildup that can cause bad breath in your mouth.

Our doctor performs a comprehensive program of preventive dental care to avoid dental issues and maintain the overall health of your teeth.
