Derma-K

You are still young and active, and you feel great. But, your skin is beginning to show the effects of the sun, wind and toxins in our air. Fine lines and wrinkles are beginning to appear.

Don't worry. Facial rejuvenation using the DERMA-K laser is performed by our doctor for patients in our region to smooth out the wrinkles and restore a softer, younger appearance to your skin. You don't have to look any older than you feel!

What is a DERMA-K laser?

The DERMA-K laser from ESC Medical Systems is the first in the world of a totally new class of medical lasers. Our DERMA-K laser provides you the benefits of ERBIUM and CO2 laser skin resurfacing in one procedure. Now, we can use both the ERBIUM and CO2 lasers simultaneously to provide you with the most controlled laser skin resurfacing possible. DERMA-K was designed to remove superficial wrinkles from around the eyes, lips, forehead and cheeks, as well as deeper wrinkles seen in aging skin. Facial scars and sun-damaged skin are also excellent candidates for this treatment.

Choosing DERMA-K laser skin rejuvenation

During your consultation with our physician, you will want to explain the level of skin improvement you hope to achieve. Our doctor will then review your medical history and examine your skin type and pigmentation to determine if you are a good candidate for DERMA-K laser skin rejuvenation. Please mention any history of viral infections, sensitivity to the sun, or prior skin treatments such as skin peels, dermabrasion or Accutane you may have had within the past 6 months.

Together, you and our doctor can discuss your options, evaluate your expectations and determine the best treatment for you.

The DERMA-K laser treatment

The DERMA-K laser gives our physician precise control over the natural exfoliation process. By gently vaporizing the outer layers of sun-damaged or acne-scarred skin, your new smooth, fresh skin underneath is revealed. The fine lines and wrinkles are removed in a precise, rapid, bloodless fashion to achieve excellent results. Our doctor performs DERMA-K with local anesthesia if limited areas are treated, while full face resurfacing is usually performed with the administration of intravenous sedation. Both procedures may be performed in our office.

Benefits of DERMA-K laser rejuvenation

  • The DERMA-K laser causes less scarring, bleeding and bruising than chemical peels and dermabrasion.
  • DERMA-K laser surgery requires shorter recovery time than other treatments
  • Your physician can visually judge the effect of the treatment as it is performed.
  • A level of control can be achieved that is difficult with other treatments.
  • The increased control results in a safer and more predictable procedure.

What results can I expect from the DERMA-K laser?

Your fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes and mouth can be improved, while the deeper frown lines and grooves can be softened. Once the outer layer of skin has been removed, the new skin beneath reveals a softer, smoother, more youthful appearance. With this exciting new technology, we can tailor your treatment to achieve your expectations.

What about my recovery after my DERMA-K laser treatment?

Generally, recovery time with DERMA-K laser skin rejuvenation is short.

During the first few days after your procedure, we will prescribe ointment to keep the treated areas moist. In many cases, bandages will be required during the first 48 hours. Some temporary swelling around the eyes may occur, which will subside in a day or two. The initial redness will fade in a few weeks, and some pinkness may remain for a few weeks longer. This pinkness can be covered with cosmetics until it completely disappears.

The full effect of your treatment develops over a few months following the procedure and can be expected to last for several years. As with any cosmetic procedure, the results can be expected to fade over time, at which time the procedure can be repeated. Your new skin is tender. We recommend that you avoid direct sun exposure for a few months, and always wear a sun screen with SPF 15 or higher to protect your sensitive skin from harsh UVA and UVB rays that can cause a change in pigmentation.
